TOWSON, Md. -- Josh Hughes has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Soccer Team.
A senior, Hughes holds a perfect 4.0 GPA and majors in ACS chemistry. He was tabbed to the Southern Athletic Association all-conference team earlier this week. Hughes led Berry with nine goals and 19 points. He is the first Berry student-athlete to earn Division III Academic All-America honors.
The Peachtree City, Ga. scored an impressive five goals (on five shots) in the first half of a 5-0 win over visiting Birmingham-Southern on Oct 27. He earned the conference's offensive player of the week honor that same week. Hughes helped Berry to a 10-6-2 mark.
Hughes earned Capital One Academic district honors the past two seasons. Last year, he was tabbed to the NSCAA All-Region First Team, SAA First Team and SAA All-Academic Team. Hughes helped the Vikings to the 2012 SAA Championship. He ended his career with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points.
"No one works harder on or off the field than Josh and this award is fully deserved," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "He has been a wonderful example to others during his four years at Berry. We will greatly miss not having him next season."
After graduation in May, Hughes will pursue a professional soccer career, perhaps overseas. Thereafter, he plans on attending graduate school to study organic chemistry. Hughes hopes to one day be a college professor.
