MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Despite collecting eight hits, the Berry College baseball team was bested by the visiting Maryville Scots 11-3 in their season opener on Tuesday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin field.
In the top of the second, Maryville's Bryce Redaja scored on a wild pitch, allowing Mike Homan to advance to third. Patrick Messinger then reached first on an error by first baseman Quinn Smith, bringing Homan home and moving the Scots’ lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the second, Berry’s Dylan Beasley walked, bringing home Jacob Delk to cut the lead in half, 2-1. The Vikings then scored again after Devin Post singled to shortstop to bring home Smith, tying the score 2-2.
The Scots applied pressure in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to push the score to 6-2. An error moved the score to 7-2 before Johnny Carpenter added a grand slam to give the Scots their biggest lead of the day, 11-2.
The Vikings would score their final run in the bottom of the seventh inning off an RBI triple from Tyler Calvert, scoring Will Deems to finish the game at 11-3. On the day, the Scots finished the game with 11 hits to Berry’s eight.

The Vikings will host Emory & Henry on Saturday, Feb. 10 in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
