ATLANTA, Ga. - A warm day in Atlanta, Georgia set the scene for the Berry Vikings to try and reestablish themselves as they have been in a slight slump in recent time. Unfortunately, after playing the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, with the result ending in a 13-20 loss.
With the 1st period being rather even ending in 4-3 in advantage of the Petrels, the score was opened with Senior, Dan Taraska scoring her first goal of the game, which was then responded with an equalizer by the Petrel. The Vikings then gave themselves the lead once again by a goal from senior,
Katie Claire Smith to mark her 20th goal of her senior year campaign. Her goal was followed by one from freshman,
Lillie Swanson, which marked her first goal of the game. The end of the first period was closed out by a responsive and determined Oglethorpe as they put 3 goals away to end the period in the lead.
The 2nd period proved to be slightly more one sided in favor of the Petrels, however sophomore,
Morgan Barton put up an early equalizer to start the period to an even the score at 4. This was followed by another 2 goals from the Petrels taking a 2 goal lead. Following this sequence, sophomore,
Isabel Fransen scored a goal to cut the lead in half, marking her 12th goal of the season, which was followed by Swanson putting away her 2nd goal of the match, marking her 24th goal of the game, while also putting up yet another equalizer. Another trade of goals occurred as the Petrels put up another goal to take the lead, but Junior,
Lydia Whitlock equalizes for the Vikings, marking her 2nd goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Petrels would put away 4 goals to end the first half of the game leaving the first half 11-7 in favor of the Stormy Petrels.
With the 3rd period of the game starting, a comeback seemed to be in the works with Taraska putting away 2 goals to make the score a close 9-11, however an offensive surge came about from the Petrels, as they put scored 3 more goals to start to establish some real estate with the lead they had, making the score 9-14. Taraska would score her 4th goal of the game to give the Vikings their 10th goal, but was responded with a goal by the Petrels to make the score 10-15 by the end of the 3rd period.
With the 4th and final period of the game, the Petrels extended their lead yet again, but in response from the Vikings, came Tarsaska's 5th goal of the game marking her 30th goal of her senior campaign. The Petrels put up another 3 goals to make the Vikings comeback seem out of reach, with the score being 11-19 in favor of the Vikings. A goal from Barton was followed by the Petrel's 20th goal of the game, and that seemed to seal the deal for the Petrels to secure victory against the Vikings. A hat trick was completed by Barton after the Petrel's goal, marking her 12th goal of the season ending the game in a 13-20 score in favor of the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels.
The Vikings are set to play against the Southwestern University Pirates on Sunday, April 26 at home in Valhalla Field. They plan to take their focuses on ending the regular season on a high note.Â
