HILTON HEAD, S.C. -
On the final day of their spring break trip, the Berry College women's tennis team faced Georgetown College and came away with a big 5-2 win.
Due to incoming rain, the match order was reversed with singles now being played before doubles. With only 3 courts to play on, the women found themselves in a 1-2 match deficit. Second singles Carolina Hanson and third singles Maggie Cox both battled consistent opponents in over two hours of matchplay, but fell just short of the finish line as they lost the deciding third set in 10-point tiebreaks. However, Paige Evans at fourth, Charlee Eidson at fifth, and Sydney Coppola at sixth came onto the courts swinging, stifling their opponents with a barrage of strong serves and won decisively, giving up a total of just 3 games!
Having now clinched the meet 4-2 in match count, the women's doubles were rearranged to feature new entrants.
Rika Manning and
Kylee Craig made their debut at third doubles, showcasing exquisite netplay in a 6-1 victory. The ladies only needed one more match win to clinch the doubles, but following second doubles' defeat, it was up to the seasoned first doubles veterans Saris Mejia /
Carolina Hanson to seal the deal. The match came down to a deuce point when Berry was up 6-5 in the set, and following a high-paced point where all four players found themselves up at the net volleying, Berry managed to narrowly prevail. The women thus conclude an eventful week of matchplay with a 5-2 victory over Georgetown College!
