Vikings Hold off Tigers for Big Road Win

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Berry College men's basketball team (9-12, 5-5 SAA) bounced back from losing their previous two games to get a key 93-89 win over the Sewanee Tigers on Sunday afternoon on the road.

The Tigers took the early lead out of the gate but the Vikings would grab the lead six minutes on a dagger three by Cam Pope to go up 7-6. The teams would then trade the lead with Mason Lawrence putting the Vikings back ahead 10-9 with 12:11 left. The Tigers would keep it close trailing 16-15 until the Vikings exploded on a 15-2 run led by seven points from Canon Armstead to extend their advantage to 31-17 with 7:57 to go. The Tigers would rally to get back within eight but the Vikings offense continued to dish it out as Drew Winegarden found Isaac Martin for a big three right before the break as they took a 46-33 lead at halftime.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half as Ryan Luttrell hit a big three to put the Vikings up 49-35. The Tigers would finally find momentum as they closed back within 53-50 with 15:18 left. Needing an answer the Vikings found one as Isaac Plavich found Luttrell for a three to spark a 15-2 run as they stretched their lead back out to 68-52 midway through the half. The Tigers would try to find an answer but the Vikings responded with Isaac Martin laying it in as the Vikings led 77-64 with 5:50 to go. Armstead would then hit another three with 3:35 to go to push the Vikings lead back to 81-67. The Tigers didn't give up as they came storming back to make it 93-89 with :14 seconds left but the Vikings didn't fold as Winegarden hit a late free throw to secure a 93-89 win.

Pope led the Vikings with 21 points while Martin put up 17 along with big contributions off the bench from Armstead with 13 points and Lawrence with 12.

The Vikings continue action at home as they host Southwestern on Friday, February 13 at 8:00 PM in the Cage Center.
