Women's Tennis Splits with Snead State and Wallace State

| By:
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College women's tennis team faced a doubleheader this afternoon as they took on Snead State followed by Wallace State. The Vikings took down Snead State before dropping a tough matchup to Wallace State on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center.

After their last difficult match against Jacksonville State University, the women would first face Snead State Community College with the intent of showcasing their continued growth.

First doubles Saris Mejia / Carolina Hanson and second doubles Maggie Cox / Paige Evans both rocketed to a strong start, hardly missing any shots in their convincing 6-0, 6-0 victories. Third doubles Charlee Eidson / Sydney Coppola were not far behind, staying strong on their service games and securing the necessary breaks of serve to win 6-1.

Third singles Carolina Hanson and fourth singles Paige Evans were the only two players to not drop a single game against Snead State CC with resounding 6-0, 6-0 victories. Saris Mejia played controlled tennis as she battled an illness, finishing 6-1- 6-0 with high spirits. Maggie Cox at second singles had a slow start but found her footing in a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Sydney Coppola at fifth singles and Charlee Eidson at sixth singles both faced strong competition, but maintained an aggressive stance to take control of their matches 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively as the Vikings prevailed 7-0.

Following a relatively straightforward victory against Snead State CC, the women would continue the day by facing Wallace State Community College.

Saris Mejia / Carolina Hanson at first doubles held close up to 6-6, after which only a few deciding points led to their tiebreak loss. Maggie Cox / Paige Evans at second doubles started strong but faltered on just a few key points in their 4-6 loss. The new third doubles pairing of Sydney Coppola / Charlee Eidson impressed the crowd with their shotmaking and strategical prowess despite their 4-6 loss.

In singles, Maggie Cox at second singles and Charlee Eidson at fifth singles stayed close to their competition with some of the day's longest rallies in 2-6, 3-6 and 4-6, 3-6 losses, respectively. Paige Evans at fourth singles was en route to win the first set but was broken in the last game, swinging the momentum 5-7, 1-6. Carolina Hanson at third singles mounted a strong second set comeback as she figured out her opponents game play, but it was too little too late in a 1-6, 4-6 loss.  However, Saris Mejia at first singles produced match of the day as she fought back from fatigue and a first set deficit to win 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Sydney Coppola also prevailed at singles winning 6-3, 6-3 but the Vikings fell 5-2.

After facing some of the season's strongest opponents, the women will travel to Emory University this weekend as to continue to improve ultimately heading towards their conference tournament.
