MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College women's lacrosse team took down the Piedmont University Lions 13-2 on Wednesday night at Valhalla Stadium.
The early minutes in the first quarter didn't see much action until the Vikings broke the deadlock at 9:44 as
Morgan Barton put the Vikings up 1-0. No sooner had play restarted then the Vikings had the ball in the back of the net again as
Dani Taraska set up
Isabel Pregont to make it 2-0 less than a minute later. The floodgates then opened with five minutes to go as
Lillie Swanson took advantage of a Lions turnover to make it 3-0. The Vikings then cashed in on the man advantage as
Katie Claire Smith fired in a goal setup by
Katie Collier to increase the Vikings lead to 4-0. The Vikings then finished off the quarter with two more goals from Barton and Swanson to take a commanding 6-0 lead at the break.Â
The Vikings continued to dominate in the second quarter as Taraska scored her first of the game just seconds after the restart to make it 7-0. The Lions would finally find a response with 7:35 to go as they made it 7-1. The Vikings weren't done scoring either as
Lydia Whitlock scored on a free position attempt to make it 8-1. The Vikings then scored quickly off the next draw control as Swanson set up Taraska for her second of the game to increase the lead to 9-1. The Vikings then took advantage of another man up opportunity as Taraska found Smith in front of the net to make it 10-1 with 2:08 to go. The Lions would answer with a late goal right before the half as the Vikings led 10-2 at halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive affair as the Vikings allowed just one shot on a free position attempt that was blocked. The offense meanwhile added to their lead with just one goal as Pregnot scored her second of the game to increase the Vikings lead to 11-2.Â
The Lions tried to answer but the Vikings defense held strong as they shutout the Lions in the fourth quarter. The Vikings offense also scored again as Swanson found the back of the net two more times as the Vikings won 13-2.
Dani Taraska led the offense with six points (4 goals and 2 assists) while Swanson led the team with four goals.
Libby Pittman led the Vikings in goal with five saves.
The Vikings return to action on Sunday, March 1 at noon against Spalding at home.
