Vikings Score 34 Unanswered to Rout Pirates 34-6

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College football team scored 34 unanswered points as they took down the Southwestern University Pirates 34-6 on Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day at Valhalla Stadium.

The Pirates marched down the field on their first drive to take a 6-0 lead with the Vikings blocking the extra point attempt. The Vikings quickly responded with a 10 play 71 yard drive with Andrew Davis delivering an eight yard rushing touchdown to tie it 6-6 with 7:20 to go. The Vikings would then go for two but came up short as the game remained tied. The Vikings defense would then shut down the Pirates with a quick three and out on the next possession as the quarter ended 6-6.

The Vikings then responded with a 12 play 71 yard drive finished off by a two yard rushing touchdown from Andrew Hunter to put the Vikings up 12-6 with them once again coming up short on the two point try. The Vikings defense then dominated the Pirates while the offense continued to find openings. Pinned back to their own 15 on the next drive Hunter led the offense on a 10 play 85 yard drive finishing it himself with a 25 yard touchdown run to increase the Vikings lead to 20-6 as he converted the two point conversion himself with 5:56 to go in the second. The Vikings would then add another late touchdown as Hunter scored his third rushing touchdown of the day on a six play 61 yard drive as the Vikings took a commanding 27-6 advantage at the half.

The Vikings looked to extend their advantage to start the third but the Pirates finally came up with a stop to give their offense a chance to get back into the game. That wasn't about to happen though as the Vikings defense forced another three and out. The offense then responded with Hunter again leading the team on an eight play 80 yard drive ending in a one yard touchdown run by Jay Kanazawa rushing touchdown to extend their lead to 34-6 with 7:32 left in the third quarter.

After exchanging punts the Vikings looked to extend their lead in the fourth quarter but a costly penalty brought back another touchdown as the game remained 34-6. The Pirates then got the ball moving again against the Vikings subs as they drove all the way down to the Berry five yard line. The defense stood strong though as the Vikings forced a turnover on downs as they came away with a 34-6 victory.

Hunter led the offense going 12-for-17 for 135 yards while rushing for another 120 yards and three touchdowns. Eli Warrington led all receivers with five receptions for 66 yards. Andrew Davis also rushed for 77 yards on 13 attempts.

The Vikings will continue action on the road as they travel to Maryville, TN to take on Maryville College on Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 PM.
