GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Berry Men's Golf 2025 campaign is officially underway. The team traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina to play in the Gate City Invitational this past weekend. In their first event of the season, the Vikings shot a three day, 54-hole total of 24 over par.
Senior
Landon Painter led the way for the Vikings with a three-day total of one over par. His stellar play featured an eagle on the par 5 18th hole in round one and included a pair of one under 71's in the first two rounds. Painter led the team in par 5 scoring and placed in a tie for eight out of all participants with a score of -5. Out of ninety-six total players, Painter placed in a tie for 15th.
Senior
Jay Sanders began the tournament with a +6, 78 in round one
on Monday morning. In the afternoon round, Sanders soared up the leaderboard after posting a -2, 70 which was the lowest individual round from a Berry player this week. Sanders concluded the event with a -1, 71 which put him in 20th place with a +3 total. Sanders led the tournament in par 3 scoring at -4. Sanders credits that the success he found on par 3s this week came from playing a par 3 course for qualifying just a couple weeks back. He stated, "it helped me prioritize hitting the middle of the greens" which led to zero bogeys on the par 3 holes for the tournament.
Junior transfer
Zack Lim was calm and collected in his first ever tournament with the Vikings. Zach was steady all 54 holes with a three-day total of +5. His low score of the week came in his first round in the blue and white when he posted an even par 72. Lim followed up his opening round 72 with a +2, 74 in round two and a +3, 75 in the final round. Lim was the only player on the team without a double bogey for the event. Lim placed in a tie for 32nd.
Junior
Josh Lay had counting scores in rounds one and three. He fired an opening round of 76 which included three birdies and a closing round of 80. In the second round Lay posted a +6, 78.
Fellow Junior,
Cam Baker shot a +10, 82 in round one and bounced back in round two with a +3, 75. Baker closed the event with a birdie en route to a +12, 84 in the final round. Baker remained positive after the event and says that he is looking forward to upcoming opportunities in which he can improve his scoring.
The team's next event will take place
on September 21st-23rd in Florida.
