MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College Vikings ended their home stay suffering their first loss of the season against the number three ranked Emory Eagles 1-3 on Saturday evening.
The Vikings started the first half by punting the ball out of bounds, giving Emory their first possession of the game off a goal kick. Berry tried to find their rhythm early in the first, taking the first two shots of the game, but the Eagles' defense prevented them from finding their footing. Meanwhile, the Eagles slowed the game to their pace, slowly setting up their attacks to keep Berry off their half of the field. Seventeen minutes in, Emory put themselves on the scoreboard first, scoring a goal on a penalty kick. They rode their momentum, scoring another goal seven minutes later to go up 2-0. The Vikings' defense prevented the Eagles from stretching their lead any further, but they couldn't convert defense to offense, ending the half scoreless.
The Eagles started the second half with the ball and looked to extend their lead against the Vikings. They got out to a quick start, extending their lead to three only two minutes into the half from another penalty kick. The Vikings' offense couldn't get anything going in response, but the Eagles' offense couldn't build on their lead as the Vikings' defense prevented Emory from scoring again for the rest of the game. With eleven minutes left in the half,
Jack Raulston decided to do it himself to give the Vikings their first and only goal of the game. When the timer ran out, the final score was 3-1 in the Eagles favor.
The Vikings head north to Lookout Mountain to turn it around against the Covenant College Scots on Thursday, September 18th at 5:00 p.m.
