MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Women's Lacrosse captured their first win of the season at Valhalla with a huge victory over Methodist, 17-8.
Preseason All-American,
Dani Taraska and freshmen
Isabel Fransen showed out in the home/season opener today, boasting four goals a piece.
After a close game history the last two seasons with the Monarchs, the Vikings suited up for a tough matchup against a valued opponent.
All seemed true throughout the first half as Methodist went up 3-1 after an initial goal from
Maddie Mashburn. Fransen notched her first collegiate career goal in the closing minutes of the first period and was followed by another one from
Katie Claire Smith to go down by one 4-3.
With the score at 6-4, Monarchs at the beginning of the second, Berry stepped up to defend their home turn. The caught fire under the nice 70-degree weather in Mt. Berry. The freshmen pair of
Morgan Barton (scoring her first collegiate goal today and two for the game) and Fransen packed a pair of goals to tie it up quick and bring momentum to the field.
Barton claimed the lasting lead for the Vikings before the close of the second period. As Berry came back out of the locker room, an 8-0 run pushing into the fourth period was all the team needed to sit on top the rest of the game.
Methodist would find two more goals but
Hayden Clement also scored her first collegiate goal as the Vikings finished off the Monarchs 17-8.
Taraska and
Sydney Howard were huge on the defensive end with four caused turnovers a piece while
Myskina Bolavong got it done between the pipes, playing the whole game and capturing the win with 15 saves, a new career high for her.
Berry shared the ball well led by
Molley Cross, Fransen and
AnnaKate Estock's 3 assists each.
Catch the Vikings back in action on February 21 in Ohio as they take on Ohio Wesleyan.
