DEMOREST, Ga. - Berry Women's Lacrosse hit the road to Piedmont for a night matchup against the Lions, taking them down in overtime 16-15.
Freshman,
Morgan Barton's six goals lifted Berry to a victory with the help of a sudden death goal from
Dani Taraska to finalize it.
It was preseason All-American
Dani Taraska who two opening goals to get things started after a late push for a 6:30 PM game time, both goals occurring in the first minute and a half of play after two successful draws. The Lions then went on a 4-0 run on their home field to take the lead and spark their sideline hype club.
Annakate Estock scored the next goal to shut down the run, but Piedmont answered that goal quickly. Maddie Dahl and
Morgan Barton notched the next two to get out of the first period tied at five goals.
Goals became a back-and-forth affair in the second until
Dani Taraska tied it at 7 to spark a 3-0 run sponsored by Barton and
Maddie Mashburn for the 9-7 lead at the half.Â
After the half, Berry tried to hang on to their lead, but the Lions overcame adversity to make the game even again at 10 a piece. Back-to-back goals for Barton gave back the Viking advantage heading to the fourth. However, both goalies were put to the test today with many shots. The combination of
Myskina Bolavong and
Libby Pittman had seven saves on the night.Â
Unfortunately, both teams were able to whirl it by the other teams' goalie in the fourth, with Piedmont able to once again overcome the two-goal deficit to tie it. With two minutes left in the game, Barton hit her sixth and final goal of the night, looking to take the one-point win, but in the last nine seconds Piedmont was able to hang on and push the game to overtime.
With overtime for lacrosse being a sudden death affair, having the first possession is crucial. Piedmont gained that possession and held on for a while to get the perfect shot, the shot was saved and scooped up by Pittman for a Berry clear. After the clear Taraska attacked and was awarded a free position attempt where she ended it all with a perfect goal.
Berry will be back in action on March 8 in Texas to take on Southwestern.
