Vikings Race Past Scots 97-88

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College men's basketball team took on the Covenant Scots Tuesday night at the Cage. Berry was able to handle the Scots with a 97-88 win to move to 3-2 on the season.

The Scots won the opening tip and converted the first basket of the game. Bennett Frazer started off the Vikings night 2/2 from the field with two layups. Grant Stubbs followed that up with a three-point shot turned into a four-point play with the foul. Heading into the first timeout, Berry was tied up with Covenant 11-11 after five minutes of play. Canon Armstead nailed a three right out of the break to put the Vikings ahead by three. At the halfway point in the first half, the Scots led Berry 25-24. Ryan Luttrell came off the bench with an immediate spark to the lineup with five points in two possessions. Covenant held the lead for eight more minutes before a pair of free throws from Stubbs put the Vikings ahead late in the first half. A late Vikings rally from Frazer and Cameron Pope extended the Vikings lead to 50-45 at the end of the first half. Stubbs led the way for Berry with 12 points in the first half.

Pope started off the second half with an early layup to continue the momentum on offense. Into the first timeout of the second half, Berry led by seven with a 58-51 lead. Chase Lamey made a deep three out of the break to extend the lead to the largest of the game at ten. The lead remained at ten until the halfway point where Covenant cut into the lead with two free throws to make the game 71-62. Pope flashed his skills twice at the rim with two highly contested layups at the eight-minute mark. The lead continued to increase to as much as 20 with Covenant being charged two technical fouls during the Vikings offensive explosion. Covenant responded with a run of their own to cut the lead down to eight before time eventually expired. Pope and Stubbs led the team with 16 points each.

Berry is back in action this Saturday, Nov. 22nd at home at 2:00 PM against Hanover College.
