No. 21 Vikings Race Past Majors 43-20

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The No. 21 Berry College football team (6-1, 4-0) dominated the Millsaps College Majors 43-20 on Saturday afternoon at Valhalla Stadium to stay undefeated in conference play.

The Majors fresh off an upset of Maryville looked to surprise the Vikings but the Vikings defense forced a quick three and out on the first possession to hold the Majors at bay. The Majors tried to regain the momentum on the ensuing punt as they recovered a muffed fumble by the Vikings at the Berry 35. The Berry defense was once again up to the task as they stopped the Majors on 4th and 2 to give their offense a chance. The defensive stalemate continued through the first quarter as neither team could get much going. Later in the quarter the Vikings special teams came up with a huge play as Buie Crawford blocked the punt to give the Vikings great field position at the Millsaps 39. The Vikings then marched down the field on four plays with Andrew Hunter delivering a touchdown pass to Nate Lyons to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead.

The Majors looked for a response but once again the Vikings defense held strong with Dawson Livingston delivering a huge sack on third down. The Vikings special teams then delivered again with Cade Petty blocking it to set the Vikings offense up at the Millsaps 12. The Vikings then punched in with four straight rushes from Andrew Hunter and then a successful two point conversion by Brendan Gray to make it 14-0 at the end of the first.

The Vikings defense would then force another three and out on the ensuing possession which the offense quickly capitalized on as Colby Sikes raced for 47 yards on the first play and then two more on the next play for a touchdown. Nate Lyons then rushed in for the two point conversion to increase the Vikings lead to 22-0. The Majors tried to answer on their next drive but once again the Vikings were having none of that as Ben Brookshire came up with a sack on 3rd and 9 to end the Majors drive. The Vikings would then add to their lead as they took just seven plays to get back in the end zone with another Sikes touchdown run this time for 28 yards to make it 29-0.

The Vikings defense continued to smother the Majors while the offense looked for another score before halftime. That didn't happen though as a miscue on the snap from the Millsaps 29 put the Vikings back to 2nd and 30 at midfield. A couple plays later the Majors picked off Christian Lewis and took the ball all the way back to make it 29-7 right at halftime giving them momentum going into the break. The Vikings defense held the Majors quarterback to just 7-of-11 for 25 yards in the first half.

The Vikings would dash any hope of a Majors comeback in the second half as the offense marched down the field on an 18 play 10 minute drive with Hunter punching in the ball on 4th and 1 to make it 36-7 with just five minutes left in the quarter. The Majors would finally get some offense going on the ensuing drive but the Vikings defense delivered again as Dreshawn Steven delivered a 13 yard sack on 3rd and 16 from the Vikings 27 to force a punt. Andrew Hunter would then lead the Vikings offense back down the field with Josh Rogers punching in the ball from the one yard line as the Vikings went up 43-7 with 13:08 left in the fourth.

The Vikings then put in their fourth string allowing the Majors to score two late touchdowns and make the score 43-20 with 8:26 remaining. The Vikings defense would then come up with another stop while the offense killed off the clock to seal a dominant 43-20 win.

The Vikings return to action on Saturday, November 1 at 1:00 PM as they head to Danville, KY to take on Centre.
