Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Vikings hit the road on Saturday afternoon, as they battled the Millsaps Majors, who they dominated by a final score of 4-1, fueled by a potent offense led by two goals from Giselle Aitken and a goal and an assist from Gianna Maimone.
Things got going nearly instantly offensively for the Vikings, as Gianna Maimone found space on the far sideline before sending a picture-perfect crosser to Ide Strickland, who gracefully scored from point-blank range less than five minutes into the game.
Just a few minutes later, defense turned into offense for Berry, as their strong defense created a corner kick. Giselle Aitken lined up an unbelievable catacorner shot that went careening off the outstretched arms of the Millsaps keeper and into the net, as Aitken and her teammates rejoiced with a 2-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining in the first half.
Time of possession continued to be in favor of the Vikings, as they suffocated the Majors' offensive attack throughout the first half. Later in the half, the Majors threatened in their attacking third, but nothing came of it, as the tenacity of the Viking defense shined to preserve a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.
As the second half went off, both teams traded jabs until Millsaps was able to score on a long pass that was perfectly executed and led to a shot and a goal for the Majors, making the score 2-1 Vikings with just over 20 minutes left.
Unfazed, Aitken executed a textbook give and go with Mia Ries, as Aitken was hit in stride and finished off a tremendous goal to make the score 3-1 with just over 19 minutes remaining in the game. Just a few minutes later, Aitken paid things forward to Gianna Maimone who lined up a shot from straight away, that breezed through the back of the net to give Berry a commanding 4-1 lead with just under 17 minutes left.
Smelling the victory, the Viking offense did not let up, as Peyton Goolsby found a seam and scored a goal to make the score a whopping 5-1. Following this, the game would be salted away, resulted in a dominant victory for the Vikings.
Women's soccer will be in action again on October 18th at home against Rhodes College, beginning at 2:30 PM.
