MOUNT BERRY, Ga.-- Tucker Wright's poise during the Berry Cross Country Equal Distance Meet on Saturday morning could have misled anyone into believing he was a veteran upperclassman. In truth, Wright is merely a sophomore, and his personal best time of 26:15.07 propelled the Rome native to his inaugural first-place finish in a Berry uniform.
Taking a deep breath, Wright heard the starting gun, a sound that has echoed through his ears countless times throughout his career. With a strong start, Wright trailed only Berry alum Ben Hanlon. As they turned on to the final lap of the Clara Bowl, Wright trailed Hanlon by a mere six seconds. Saving his best lap for last, Wright finished his final two kilometers in 6:19, 11 seconds faster than his previous lap. That final push edged Wright past Hanlon, claiming an indisputable first place.
Hanlon finished with a time of 26:39.36 for second place. Ethan Smith exemplified consistency as the junior stayed in third place throughout the competition, finishing with a time of 26:50.80. Troy Blackwood, the third Berry finisher, took fourth place on the podium with a fast 27:15.19 8k.
The final two countable scores from the Vikings are attributed to Peter Ivester and McKinley Chappell, placing sixth and seventh respectively. Ivester clocked in at 27:17.10, while Chappell was shortly behind with a time of 27:31.05.
Collectively, the Vikings scored a low 21. Members of the Shorter University men's cross country team were also in attendance, but they did not have enough finishers to collect a countable team score.
The Vikings will toe the line once again in two weeks time at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
