NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Berry Men's Lacrosse hit the road to face another top ranked opponent, #4 Christopher Newport and fell to the Captains 26-12.
The game started strong in the first period after two quick goals by the Captains to be assertive, the Vikings did not back down.
Michael Beirne found an unassisted goal to cut it to 2-1.Â
Consecutive goals from
Ethan Perlakowski and
Finn McClendon tied the game at three in the first and fed the Vikings scoring momentum. Each team scored one more before heading to the second,
Michael McKenzie's goal came under the two-minute mark, his first of five, the leading scorer for Berry on the day.
It was in the second that the Captains showed their rank and began to pull away with a run of 8-1 over the Vikings. McKenzie was the lone scorer for Berry in the second before heading to halftime down 12-5.
Perlakowski started the scoring back up in the third with the opening second half goal (12-6). McKenzie returned with back-to-back goals, but CNU closed out the period with six goals to shut down the road team Berry.
In the fourth, the Vikings were unable to cut the deficit under double figures in Virginia.
Addison Irwin saw lots of action in the goal today for the Vikings with 16 saves in his 50 minutes of play, while
Caleb Johnston picked up a team high seven ground balls during his face-offs, and Beirne led with four assists for the team.
Berry will be back in action on March 2 in Davenport, Florida, taking on Moravian University at 1:00 PM ET.
