MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - In a senior day SAA matchup with in-state rival, Oglethorpe, the Vikings exceeded expectations in a 4-0 shutout of the Stormy Petrels.
Prior to the game, the Vikings took the time to honor their 2024 seniors:
Savannah Courtenay
Molly Hellwig
Hannah Henn
Lizzie Ely
Margaret Eddins
Haylee Stephens
With senior day jitters out of the way, Berry took to the field to take down their opponent. For the game, the Vikings outshot the Stormy Petrels 13-3 overall, finding the back of the net 4 times.
Berry started their attack early with five quick shots in the first twenty minutes, until a corner kick by
Giselle Aitken found the head of
Teresa Rodriguez, the Vikings leading scorer of the day, for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
Rodriguez would be the only action of the first half as late shots from
Peyton Goolsby could not connect.
The second half was a three goal scoring frenzy for the Vikings, having their home crowd rally behind them. Once again it was Rodriguez with a goal to spark the scoring, assisted by
Mia Ries. Three minutes later,
Kelsie Crosier scored her first goal of the season with a superb pass from
Ide Strickland to make it 3-0.
Up on the Petrels, Berry began substituting players, one being seniors
Hannah Henn, who has been out all season due to injury. Making her first appearance today, Henn stepped on the field determined. In a matter of seconds, Aitken was taking a corner and Henn jumped up to head the ball into the net for her first goal of the season in her first appearance!
With the crowd blown away and all momentum on the Vikings side, the Petrels could not find any grit to make a comeback and the Vikings cruised to the 4-0 victory.
