Vikings Win Series Over Centre

Zachary Hardee went 4-for-4, Riley Uhls hit his first collegiate homer, and Jackson Halla went the distance on the mound as Berry took the rubber game and the second game of a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Centre, 6-2, Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky. In the first game of the twin bill, Centre earned a 4-3 walk-off win.

Berry (18-20, 11-10 SAA) took the series from Centre to clinch a winning record in SAA regular season play; however, due to other results around the league, the Vikings finish in fifth place in the final regular season standings and will have to travel to Hendrix for a three-game series next weekend. Birmingham-Southern, which was swept by Hendrix and has lost five games in a row, wins the regular season championship over Centre and Rhodes by a single game. Centre has the head-to-head tiebreaker with Rhodes to clinch the second seed in the league.

Series Game Three: Berry 6, Centre 2
The Vikings saw Hardee drive in three and set a new career-high for hits in a game with four from the leadoff spot as Berry picked up the win. Hardee helped the Vikings start the scoring as he singled, then moved to third on a Nick Brunswick single to right. Uhls then drove in his first run of the game as his ground out to short brought Hardee across the plate.

Berry would strike with two outs in the second, stringing together three hits in a row as Hardee's single at the end of the string plated Joey Garcia to make it 2-0. The score remained the same until the fourth when Garrett Lang's ground out scored Levi Cloud, then a double by Hardee to right brought in Garcia from second for a 4-0 advantage.

Uhls led off the top of the fifth inning with a towering blast over the elevated fence in left for a solo homer, the first long ball of the freshman's career. BC tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Hardee singled back up the middle to bring in Garcia for the third time in the game, giving Berry a half-dozen in the run column.

Centre would mount a mild charge with two runs in the sixth, but Halla (4-1) would retire the side in order in the seventh to lock down the complete game win. Halla would allow just four hits and one earned run while fanning four in the victory.

Series Game Two: Centre 4, Berry 3
In Berry's final nine inning game of the regular season, the Vikings overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the middle innings. An RBI single with the bases loaded by Joey Garcia made it 2-1 in the second, but a costly double play deprived the Vikings of any more runs. Still, Berry would tie the game up one inning later as Andrew Pendleton grounded out to first with two men in scoring position to even the score at 2-each.

Berry took the lead in the seventh as Pendleton drove in his second run of the contest, this time on a single into center that plated Brunswick. Again, however, a double play would keep Berry from tacking on any more runs.

After Berry turned its own double play to get out of a jam in the seventh, a triple with two outs in the eighth would see Centre tie the game up. In the ninth, three consecutive singles would see the Colonels come away with the 4-3 win.

Charles Stephenson gave up just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work on the mound. Will Marquart pitched a scoreless seventh, while Ethan Crump and Tyler Cassidy (3-4) each gave up a run in .2 innings of work.
