Berry held a 4-0 lead, but two big innings would give University of the South a 7-5 victory over the Vikings to close a Southern Athletic Association baseball series Sunday afternoon in Sewanee, Tenn.
With the bases loaded in the second, the Vikings would take advantage for three runs.
Nick Brunswick would single to center, with the ball mishandled in centerfield.
Zachary Hardee scored on the hit, and
Garrett Lang scored on the error to make it 2-0. One batter later,
John D'Amelio would reach on a throwing error, scoring
John Poist to make it a 3-0 game.
Berry (10-17, 5-7 SAA) would take advantage of a balk and a wild pitch in the fourth to go ahead 4-0. From there, things would go sideways for BC. An error extended the bottom of the fourth and led to a three-run homer to cut the lead to one, 4-3. In the sixth, the Tigers (14-13-1, 2-10 SAA) would load the bases, eventually scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead.
The Vikings would mount a rally in the ninth. A walk to
Nick Brunswick and a single by
Wesley Wade brought the tying run to the plate with one out. After a fly out moved Brunswick to third, a wild pitch would bring him the remaining distance home to cut the lead to two, 7-5. That would be as close as BC would get as a ground out would end the game one batter later.
The Vikings will be back in action Tuesday at LaGrange.
