MOUNT BERRY, Ga.— The Berry baseball team won the series against Southern Athletic Association opponent Hendrix after a 7-5 win in game two of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field. The Vikings dropped game one, 5-4.
Game Two: Berry 7, Hendrix 5
Hendrix put a run on the board in the second inning to take the score to 1-0. Berry tied the game after
Garrett Lang singled to right field scoring
Joey Garcia after his single to left center.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings scored two runs off of four hits to tie the ball game at 3-3.
Nick Brunswick led off with a single up the middle, followed by singles from
Riley Uhls,
Levi Cloud, and
John D'Amelio as Berry ambushed first pitches from Hendrix starter Andrei Stoyanow.
In the fifth, Berry (15-19, 9-9 SAA) scored another two runs off of two hits.
Zachary Hardee started the inning off by drawing a walk, followed by a Brunswick single through the left side. Uhls then had an RBI to left field to score Hardee. Cloud then tripled off the wall in center field fence to score Brunswick and bring the score to 5-3.
Hendrix (22-13, 9-9 SAA) turned around and put up two to tie the game from a two-run home run. Undaunted, three of Berry's seniors rose to the occasion in the bottom of the inning.
John D'Amelio and Garcia singled and both were put in scoring position from a sacrifice bunt by
Zac Warren. Lang then singled through the right side to bring home D'Amelio, followed by an RBI from Brunswick to give the Vikings a 7-5 lead.
That would be enough for
Tyler Cassidy, who earned his fifth save of the season by retiring the Warriors in order with a punchout along the way.
Charles Stephenson worked six solid innings in a Senior Day start and the Vikings took the rubber game of the series.
Game One: Hendrix 5, Berry 4
The Warriors put runs on the board in the second inning off of a two-run homer making the score 2-0. The Vikings responded with a three-run inning to take the lead to 3-2 off of three hits and one error started by
Wesley Maxey as he singled to right field after
Andrew Pendleton walked. D'Amelio then put both runners in scoring position. Garcia singled to left field to bring home Maxey and Pendleton to tie the score, followed by a single by
Garrett Lang to bring home Garcia to take the lead to end the second inning.
The Vikings continued to stretch the lead in the third after
Nick Brunswick singled to left field and made his way around the bases on an error and a sac fly to bring the score to 4-2.
Hendrix brought in two runs in the fourth to make it a new ball game. The Warriors brought across another run in the fifth to take a one-run lead taking the score to 5-4.
The Vikings had a scoreless six innings to lead Warriors to take the win in game two of the series.
The Vikings will be in action Tuesday afternoon at Emory in non-conference action.
