After trailing by as many as five goals, Berry rallied back with four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to tie, but a late goal by Alvernia handed the Vikings their first women's lacrosse loss of the season, 12-11, in Lake Wales, Fla., Monday afternoon.
Down 11-7 in the fourth quarter, the Vikings battled back with a 4-0 run over 3:15 to tie the contest. After a failed Alvernia clear,
Haley Larsen scored her only goal of the contest to spark the run. Alvernia (3-1) won the next draw control, but after a
Sydney Howard caused turnover,
Dani Taraska found
Molley Cross for a goal with 8:18 to go to cut the lead to two. After Berry picked up the next draw control, Cross converted on a free position shot to cut the lead to one, 11-10. Finally, after a missed Berry shot,
AnnaKate Estock would get the ground ball and find
Abby Sprayberry. Sprayberry then got the ball to Taraska, who scored her 33rd goal of the season to tie the game, 11-all, with 6:20 to go.
Alvernia would take the lead back after a Berry turnover, but the Vikings had chances to tie. With 1:38 to go, Sprayberry rang a would-be game-tying effort off the post. After
Kristina Jones made a save on the other end in the Berry cage, the Vikings would get one last chance, but Larsen's shot would be saved and Alvernia would keep possession for the rest of the game.
Berry didn't dent the scoreboard in the first quarter but trailed just 1-0. Alvernia built up a 4-0 lead by the 9:00 mark of the second quarter, but a defensive play led to an offensive response.
Mary Axelson would force a turnover, pick up the ground ball, earn the clear, then went all the way in on net and fired home her first career goal to get the Vikings on the board. While Sprayberry would also score a goal, Alvernia would build its largest lead of the game, 7-2, with 3:07 remaining in the quarter. Berry would mount a charge in the closing stages of the half, however, as Sprayberry started a 3-0 run with a goal. Taraska would win the next draw control, scoring 10 seconds later to make it 7-4. In the final moments of the quarter, Taraska would score just before the buzzer sounded to make it 7-5 after 30 minutes.
Jones was strong in goal for Berry, stopping 14 shots and holding Alvernia to 2-of-7 on free position attempts. In addition to her first career goal, Axelson picked up a career-best six ground balls.
Not including a preseason scrimmage, the Vikings (8-1) were playing their ninth game in 26 days. They will next be in action against NAIA foe Warner College Wednesday afternoon in Lake Wales.
