MOUNT BERRY, Ga.— Berry's baseball team fell to Southern Athletic Association opponent No. 1-ranked Birmingham Southern, 9-3 and 8-4, in its doubleheader Saturday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field.
Game One: 9-3
The Vikings fell to the Panthers in game one with both teams putting up 10 hits with the Vikings leaving 10 runners on base.
Nick Brunswick and Wesley Maxey had a strong game at the plate with each going 3-for-4. Patrick O'Rouke started on the mound, giving up three runs pitching 5.1 innings for Berry.
BSC and BC both had a slow start at the plate with the Panthers only putting up one hit and the Vikings putting up three until the sixth inning where the game was broken open as Birmingham Southern put up seven runs.
Berry turned around and put up three runs after Brunswick led off with a walk and Wesley Wade doubled down the left field line. Brunswick scored the first run for BC on a passed ball and Maxey singled through the left side to bring Wade home. Joey Garcia and John D'Amelio each singled, with Maxey coming home on an error to make the score 7-3 at the end of the sixth.
Birmingham Southern kept the game rolling in the seventh as they brought in two more runs to make it 9-3. BC only put across two hits by Maxey and Brunswick in the last three innings in their chance to make a comeback against the Panthers in game one.
Game Two: 8-4
The Vikings lost in their second game against BSC as they put up six hits. Tyler Childers had his first collegiate hit with a two-run single.
The scoring got started early as Birmingham Southern put up four runs in the first two innings and the Vikings scored as D'Amelio doubled to center bringing in Maxey and bringing the score to 4-1 in the bottom of the second.
In the third, BC brought in a run as Zachary Hardee scored on a wild pitch after reaching first on a fielder's choice. BSC put up another run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to bring the score to 8-2.
Childers singled to the center of the diamond in the sixth, bringing in Joey Garcia and Ronnie Caricofe making the score 8-4 to round out the scoring in the seven inning game.
The Vikings will be back to finish out the series Sunday afternoon with a starting time of 12:00 p.m. at William R. Bowdoin Field.
