Jackson Halla welt seven solid innings, allowing a lone run on six hits as Berry earned a 6-4 victory over Rhodes to close a Southern Athletic Association baseball series in Memphis, Tenn., Saturday afternoon.
The sophomore hurler tied his career-high in innings pitched, set last season against the Lynx Apr. 16. In Saturday's contest, the Lynx scored their only run off of Halla on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning.
Prior to that, the Vikings had built a 5-0 lead.
Ronnie Caricofe led off the game by being hit by a pitch, then stole second. Caricofe moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a
Wesley Wade sacrifice fly. Later in the inning,
Levi Cloud walked, stole second, and then scored on
Joey Garcia's RBI single. The Vikings needed just the one hit to score two runs to start the game.
Caricofe set the table again in the third. He would lead off with a single, move to a second on a balk, then moved forward 90-feet on a wild pitch. After a walk to
Nick Brunswick, Wade drove in his second run of the game with a single to plate Caricofe. Berry (5-10, 1-2 SAA) would load the bases with no one out, with the Vikings adding another run on a double play to make it 4-0. Two batters later,
John D'Amelio's RBI single brought home Wade to make it 5-0.
After the run by Rhodes (807, 3-3 SAA) in the fifth, Berry answered with a run in the next frame. With the bases loaded, Brunswick would beat out a potential double play ball at first, scoring
Andrew Pendleton to make it 6-1.
That would be enough for Halla and the Berry pitching staff.
Will Marquart would earn the save by getting the final three outs of the game as the Vikings earned their first SAA win of the season.
Berry will be back home this Tuesday for a contest with in-state foe Covenant. First pitch in Mount Berry, Ga., is set for 6 p.m.
