Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Trap Fighting Squirrels

Karsen Brantley scored off her own rebound in the 21st minute, giving Berry's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Mary Baldwin Saturday morning in Staunton, Va.

The Vikings dominated in possession and shots, with the only goal they would need coming off the boot of Brantley. Berry gained possession off a short goal kick by the Fighting Squirrels (3-1-1). Brantley would work a quick passing sequence with Sophia Coon 25 yards out, then made a Mary Baldwin defender miss on a tackle attempt at the top of the box. The senior then fired a shot that was saved by the Fighting Squirrels' keeper, but the rebound came right back to Brantley. She would settle the ball, then right-footed a shot from just outside the six-yard box into the back of the net to give the guests a 1-0 lead.

Berry keeper Julia Massa was forced to make just two saves in net. First, in the 19th minute, she collected a floating shot off a free kick from 25-yards out. Then in the 78th minute, Massa scooped up a shot from distance. The win was the freshman's first clean sheet as a collegiate keeper.

In all, the Vikings (2-2) had 13 shots on target and 22 total for the game.

Berry will now return to its home state for a 7 p.m. contest against Covenant College at Lookout Mountain, Ga.
