Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Fall in Season Opener to No. 22 Emory

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Three first half goals would be enough for No. 22 Emory as Berry fell to the visiting Eagles, 5-0, at Bob Pearson Field Thursday night in the season opener for both women's soccer programs.

The Vikings (0-1) knew they would be in for a tough challenge against the guests from Atlanta. In the game's sixth minute, a header off a well-delivered corner kick gave Emory an early 1-0 lead and stopped any early momentum the Vikings had created with an early created chance off the foot of Hannah Henn.

Before halftime, Emory (1-0) would find the back of the net two more times on shots from outside the box as the skill of the Eagles was on full display. While Berry would get a pair of shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, Emory would hold a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

A goal in the first two minutes of the second half stretched the Emory lead to 4-0, but Berry would buckle down defensively and not allow another score until the game's 86th minute. Julia Massa finished the evening with nine saves in net for the Vikings, but the 31-5 shot advantage for Emory would be too much as the Vikings fell int their season opener.

The Vikings will be back home home this Saturday to face Belhaven (1-0), which defeated Sul Ross State 3-1 in its season opener Thursday evening. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
