Mt. Berry, Ga. - William R. Bowdoin Field once again lived up to its reputation for being one of the toughest places to play in all of D-III baseball Friday. The Vikings knocked off No. 4 Adrian, 13-7. For Berry senior
Spence Johns, the record setting season continued as he recorded his 212th career hit in the sixth inning, becoming the all-time leader in base knocks in program history.
The first inning came and went quietly with neither team recording a hit, but the bats for Berry would soon come alive in the 2nd.
Wesley Wade roped his second double of the year down the left field line to spark the Vikings scoring effort in the 2nd. A sacrifice-fly off the bat of
Levi Cloud would score Wade two batters later for the first run of the inning. The eight-nine-hole duo of
Dalton Smith and Zach Hardee would manufacture a run to cap off the inning, Hardee recording his seventh RBI of 2022.
The Bulldogs would counter in the 3rd, scoring three themselves with two outs to take their first and only lead of the game. Ruffled by the three-spot given in the inning prior, the Vikings would breakthrough and have their biggest inning of the afternoon, scoring six runs on four hits and capitalizing on three Bulldog fielding errors. Singles
John Poist and
Spence Johns catalyzed the offense in that inning. A Wade hit by pitch would load the bases for
Andrew Pendleton who, with two strikes, doubled home all three runners. Pendleton would then wreak havoc on the base paths, taking third on a wild pitch, drawing an errant throw from the catcher and scoring on the error. Circling back to the top of the order,
Jack Poist singled home the eighth run of the ball game to complete the massive inning.
Adrian would not go quiet into the night however, scoring two in the 4th inning to cut into the deficit, making the score 8-5, then two more in the 6th to pull the Bulldogs to within one. Production from the Poist brothers and a record-breaking RBI double from Johns would bury Adrian though, as the score heading into the late inning was 10-7 and then 13-7 following another two out rally in the 8th inning. Brunswick, D'Amelio and Wade combining for those game-sealing runs.
Patrick O'Rourke was entrusted with the start against the nationally ranked Bulldogs and gave up just three earned runs over three innings.
Andrew Norred was special out of the bullpen, working 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing no earned runs to earn the win.
Will Macolino was called on to record possibly the biggest out of the game and slapped the tag down on a Bulldog runner trying to score on a wild pitch to end the inning. Finally,
Mason Carnes recorded his second save of the year, no-hitting the Bulldogs over the final three innings.
Berry will look to take down another ranked opponent tomorrow in the form of No. 25 Denison. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
