Mt. Berry, Ga. - Berry improved to 12-1 at home on the season as the Vikings swept a Southern Athletic Association baseball doubleheader from Sewanee, 14-9 and 7-1, Saturday afternoon at William Bowdoin Field.
Game One: Berry 14, Sewanee 9
The Vikings had the pedigree to defeat the Tigers in game one, scoring in just two of the nine innings.
A five-run first inning seemed to have the Vikings well on their way to victory. After an RBI from
Wesley Wade, bases loaded walks to
Nick Brunswick and
Dalton Smith made it 3-0.
Zachary Hardee's two-run single to center would give BC a 5-0 advantage after a frame.
Sewanee came back with a sledgehammer in the third, plating seven runs to give the guests a 7-5 lead. Two more runs came across for the guests in the fourth and the Tigers were working a 9-5 lead through the middle innings.
The lead held through the seventh, when the Vikings would see Sewanee degenerate defensively, allowing nine unearned runs to score.
Andrew Pendleton reached on an error to start the inning, scoring two batters later on a
Levi Cloud single to left. After a strikeout, the Vikings would score eight times with two out in the inning. A pair of infield hits loaded the bases for
Jack Poist, who drove in two runs with a single to make it 9-8.
Spence Johns would drive in two more with a double to give BC a 10-9 lead.
After another Sewanee error, Pendleton's single scored Johns to make it 11-9. A
John D'Amelio double scored two more to make it 13-9. Cloud would close the scoring with another single to plate D'Amelio and make it 14-9.
Charles Stephenson earned the win with four innings of solid relief, allowing two inherited runs to score but retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced to pick up the win with just one walk and one hit against his record.
Ethan Crump allowed two hits in two scoreless innings of relief, taking oveer the eighth and ninth.
Game Two: Berry 7, Sewanee 1
A five-run fifth inning was the difference for Berry as the Vikings clinched the doubleheader sweep with a win in the seven-inning affair.
Sewanee jumped on top in the second on an RBI single by Carter Huffman, but Berry answered back with an RBI single by
Zachary Hardee to knot the score at 1-all.
One inning later,
John D'Amelio tripled to the gap in left center to plate
Spence Johns and give the Vikings a lead they would not relinquish.
Still it wouldn't be until the fifth when the Vikings could breathe easier. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed
Wesley Wade to score to make it 3-1. Two batters later, another error allowed
Levi Cloud to get an RBI and make it 4-1.
Nick Brunswick would drive in a run with a ground out, then Hardee would plate another run with a sacrifice fly.
John Poist would score on a wild pitch with two men out in the inning to end the scoring.
That would be more than enough for
Mason Carnes, who earned a three-inning save by striking out six and allowing two hits.
Jackson Halla pitched four strong innings on the mound to get the victory.
The Vikings (17-7, 7-1 SAA) will be back Sunday at Noon to face Sewanee to close out the three-game series.
