Vikings Fall on Lookout Mountain

An early eight-run deficit proved to be too much for the Viking lineup to overcome Tuesday, as Berry fell to Covenant College, 10-6, on a dreary afternoon atop Lookout Mountain, Ga.

The Scots were the beneficiaries of six runs in the first two innings of play, they then added three more runs before the start of the fifth inning. The only run the Vikings had to show for their efforts offensively early came in the top of the first inning. A double out of the leadoff spot from Zachary Hardee and a base hit from two-hole batter Joey Garcia preceded an RBI single off the bat of Spence Johns, his 18th RBI of the season.

Down 9-1 entering the sixth, the Vikings made their best attempt of the afternoon to climb back into the ball game. Andrew Pendleton belted his team-leading 8th double of the year to lead-off the inning. Then, back-to-back walks to Blake Hyman and Nick Brunswick followed by a Wesley Maxey hit by pitch put the Scots in a bind defensively, as three wild pitches tainted the inning. Three would come into score on just one hit in the inning for the Vikings.

One last push for the Vikings came up short in the eighth inning. Two, one-out singles from Garcia and Johns tried to kickstart the Berry offense one last time. But an RBI single from Wesley Wade was all the Vikings could muster as they fell by a final score of 10-6.

Reigning Southern Athletic Association Player of the Week Andrew Pendleton stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Garcia, Johns, Wade and Brunswick all contributed multi-hit performances on a day when the lineup still totaled 14 hits. Senior pitcher Mark Swett also made his first career start.

The Vikings look to stay perfect in SAA play this weekend, heading to Jackson, Miss., to play the Millsaps Majors. The double header on Saturday commences at 1 p.m. CDT
