A nine-goal first quarter was more than enough for Berry as the Vikings defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, 20-2, Thursday afternoon in Brevard, N.C., to continue their torrid start to the season.
The Vikings impoved to 7-1 for just the second time in program history and first time since 2015. After a 20-goal win two days earlier against Brevard, the Vikings hit the 20-goal mark in back-to-back games for the first time since scoring at least 20 in four games in a row in the 2012 campaign.
Molley Cross started the game with a natural hat trick just 4:15 into the contest, with
Haley Larsen and
AnnaKate Estock earning assists on two of the three goals.
Alexa Medor,
Abby Sprayberry, and
Riley Norris would each score unassisted goals to make it 6-0, then Medor assisted goals by Estock and
Adrienna Van Soelen to make it 8-0. The final goal of the quarter came when Cross scored her fourth goal with 64 seconds left, making it 9-0.
Once Sprayberry scored her second goal of the game just 48 seconds into the second quarter, the running clock started and would continue for the rest of the contest. Berry would lead the Battling Bishops, 12-1, at the half and would score eight more times as a team in the second half to coast to the win.
Ten different players scored for the Vikings, led by Cross' five. Larsen, Sprayberry, and Van Soelen each had a hat trick, with Medor, Estock, Norris,
Maddie Mashburn,
Camille Schmied, and
Jaden Russell each finding the back of the net once.
Ally Washburn made five saves in the cage over three quarters to pick up the win.
The Vikings will attempt to move to 8-1 for the first time in program history Monday when they play host to Asbury in a rescheduled contest that was originally slated to be played at Asbury. Instead, the Vikings will host Asbury at 4 p.m. at Valhalla.
