Mt. Berry, Ga. - Playing against a team employing a stout zone defense, Berry's men's lacrosse squad combined for 11 assists in defeating Methodist, 14-5, Saturday afternoon at Valhalla Stadium.
Saturday's contest featured precision passing in the offensive zone by the Vikings (4-0) which helped the team get good looks at the opposing cage.
Jake Sheerin had five assists for the Vikings, with
Jackson Blaylock adding three on the afternoon. Berry's first seven goals featured an assist, as it wasn't until
Joey Cuthbert's hat trick goal with 4:37 left to go in the first half that the Vikings had an unassisted tally.
Sheerin scored the game's first goal almost 90 seconds in after a pass from Cuthbert, but Methodist answered back to tie the score less than a minute later.
Dillon Marchant and Blaylock would each score to make it 3-1 midway through the first quarter, and Berry would never trail again.
Michael McKenzie scored twice, with Cuthbert wrapping his hat trick around the McKenzie tallies.
Braxton Rich would score with just over a minute left in the first half, making it 9-2 heading into the locker room.
Tyler Banfield would score the first goal of the second half, then after a Methodist goal, McKenzie completed a hat trick and Blaylock scored with the man-advantage to make it 12-3 after 45 minuts of play. Methodist scored quickly to start the fourth quarter, but Rich and Banfield each scored to stretch the lead up to 10 at 14-4.Methodist would score the final goal of the game with just under nine minutes remaining as neither team would find the back of the net for the rest of the way.
RJ Maraski played the first half for the Vikings in net, making three saves to earn the win.
Berry will hit the road to face Hampden-Sydney College March 9 at 3 p.m.
