A seven-run seventh inning in Demorest, Ga., was all Piedmont needed to take care of the visiting Berry Vikings on Saturday. The Vikings had blanked the Lions, leading by a score of 4-0 heading into the 7th before the onslaught of runs from Piedmont spoiled Berry's hopes of taking a big game on the road.
Runs were at a premium to begin Saturday's contest at Loudermilk Field, as it wasn't until the top of the 3rd inning that a passed ball would score
Zachary Hardee and plate the game's first run. From there, a trio of doubles from
Jack Poist,
John D'Amelio, and
Andrew Pendleton would culminate into a four-run burst from the Vikings. Unfortunately, it would be all the Vikings muster against a strong Piedmont (5-2-1) pitching staff who only allowed a combined six hits.
It looked as though the Lions would roar back in the 5th inning when a lead-off triple and a couple of hit-by-pitches loaded the bases, but the resurgence was suppressed for the time being. Piedmont would bring the tying run to the plate and strand all three runners following an infield flyout to end the inning.
As disclosed, disaster struck in the 7th as Berry watched three back-to-back-to-back home runs leave the yard. On a day where the Vikings would only record two hits outside of their 3rd inning eruption, the Lions would comfortably close out the game with little to no resistance.
The silver lining for the Vikings came in the form of
Patrick O'Rourke who turned in yet another strong start. O'Rourke stifled the Lions, holding them scoreless, fanning three over six innings pitched and exited with the lead.
Spence Johns paced the teams in hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the losing effort.
The Vikings will look to avenge a loss from their season opener this Wendesday when they play host to Emory University. The first pitch at William R. Bowdoin field is set for 5:00 p.m.
