Vikings Improve to 2-0 at Millsaps Baseball Classic

The Berry baseball team defeated Huntingdon College 10-2 on Saturday night in Jackson, Miss. claiming its second win of the Millsaps Baseball Classic, as well as the second win of the season.

The Vikings (2-1) offense broke the game open in the third inning, with five players scoring to solidify a comfortable lead that would grow even more as the game went on.

Tyler Cassidy (1-0) earned the win, and the first of his career. He pitched five innings, recorded six strikeouts, and gave up five hits and one run. Andrew Norred pitched two innings on the mound, recording five hits and one strikeout. Mark Swett closed things out for the Vikings, giving up a single run.

Levi Cloud, Trace Cate, and Andrew Pendelton all scored two runs each.

Spence Johns singled home Jack Poist to give the Vikings a 1-0 in the first inning. In the third inning, the offense would get timely hitting and help from Huntingdon errors to grow the lead. Pendelton singled to the right, sending home John D'Amelio to make it 2-0. Then Pendelton recorded his first run of the night on a passed ball. Wesley Maxy singled, sending Trace Cate home/ Blake Hyman and Levi Cloud both followed Cate home, scoring on errors, with Jack Poist getting an RBI on one of the HC miscues.

The fourth inning was much like the third, as Huntington's defense helped Berry to plate three more runs. First, Pendelton reached home plate on a passed ball, and moments later Cate scored off Jack Poist's RBI single. Cloud then scored via a Dalton Smith ground out, giving the Vikings an eight run lead, 9-1.

Berry looks to sweep its portion of the Millsaps Baseball Classic on Sunday at 12 p.m. CST against Mississippi University for Women in Jackson, Miss.
