Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by Valentina Torres & Jason Hanes

Vikings Surge Into SAA Championship

Berry defeated top-seeded Rhodes, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn., in the Southern Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship semifinals to clinch a spot in the SAA Championship Game Sunday afternoon against Birmingham-Southern.

With the game played under cloudy skies and winds gusting over 30 miles per hour, the Vikings (9-2-5) played the SAA Regular Season Champions to a stalemate through 45 minutes. Scoreless into the early stages of the second half, the Vikings broke the deadlock. With the wind at their backs, the Vikings would take advantage of the gusty conditions with a long pass down the field from Michael Carboni that found Tracy Moon 30 yards from goal. Moon would settle the ball, then take advantage as the ball deflected off the back heel of a Rhodes defender, to break in alone on goal. Moom would bury the shot in the 57th minute for his fourth goal of the season, putting BC ahead 1-0.

Rhodes (9-2-6) applied pressure with two shots within six minutes of the Berry tally, but it was not enough as Berry's goalie Jose Palacios saved both shots. The Vikings stood tall against the Lynx surge, with BC looking to take the ball to the opposite corner flag as time wound down. With Rhodes pushing all 10 field players into the Berry defensive zone, a gutsy clearance in the box led to a chance to attack for Berry. Nathan Carlson would take the ball from midfield, streaking into the Rhodes end.  As the Rhodes keeper moved to shut down a shooting lane, Carlson dumped off to Moon, who netted his fifth goal of the season with 45 seconds left in the contest

Berry now moves into the SAA Championship against Birmingham-Southern this Sunday. The Vikings will wear the lighter colored jerseys as the No. 4-seeded team is the highest seed remaining after BSC, seeded sixth, defeated Sewanee 2-1 in the other semifinal game. Kickoff Sunday afternoon is set for 1 p.m. CST.
