Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Fall in Closing Seconds

Sylvia Kahoro scored a career-high 19 points, but it wasn't enough as Berry's final shot was blocked, allowing Asbury to escape with a 57-55 victory Friday at the Centre Classic in Danville, Ky.

Down 45-36 with just over a minute to go in the third quarter, the Vikings would embark on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to tie the game, 45-all. Asbury would regain the lead, 48-45, but a pair of free-throws by Elly Callihan and a 3-pointer by Elizabeth Sierzant gave Berry a two-point lead, 50-48, with just over two minutes to go. That would prove to be the final field goal that Berry would make, but free-throw shooting would keep the Vikings in the contest. Asbury would answer back with a 3-pointer on its next trip down court to regain the lead, but Callihan tied the score with a free-throw with 1:23 left. A tough 3-pointer gave Asbury the lead back entering the final minute.

Asbury wouldn't let the Vikings get a 3-pointer off to tie the game. Sydney Blankenship would make a pair of free-throws to pull BC within a point, but Asbury scored after a pair of Berry fouls to make it a 56-53 game. Blankenship would make two more free-throws to cap her 13-point night, and Asbury would go just 1-of-2 at the charity stripe on its next trip, giving Berry a chance. However, the Vikings weren't able to attack the basket in the waning moments, and Sierzant's 3-point attempt from the corner would be blocked just before the final horn, giving Asbury the win.

The Vikings got off to a slow start, falling behind 17-9 after one quarter; however, the Vikings would trail by just a point, 26-25, after the first half of play. Kahoro would give Berry its first lead of the game as her consecutive 3-pointers made it 31-30 with four minutes gone in the third quarter. Asbury would regain the advantage, taking a 45-36 lead before BC scored the final three points of the quarter, making it 45-39 heading to the final stanza.

Asbury (2-2) would score 24 points off of Berry's 25 turnovers, but the Vikings (1-3) stayed in the game by going 18-of-24 at the charity stripe. BC out-rebounded Asbury 47-33, with Sierzant's 12 a game-high. Kahoro had seven rebounds to go with her game-high in points.

The Vikings will be back in action Saturday when they face Spalding to wrap up their participation in the Centre Classic. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
