Sydney Blankenship had a career-best 27 points and
Kennedy Moore added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Berry's women's basketball team picked up an important Southern Athletic Association win on the road at Birmingham-Southern, 79-69, Friday night.
Blankenship went 9-of-18 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to set the best scoring mark of her three years at BC. Her previous high came at Oglethorpe earlier this season when she netted 26. For Moore, her second double-double came thanks in part to a school D-III record eight blocks, with seven of her 11 rebounds coming on the defensive glass.
The Vikings (10-6, 4-1 SAA) stayed away from the three-point line for nearly all of the game, taking only two shots from beyond-the-arc as a team. Berry scored 60 points in the paint, adding 17 free-throws as a unit to leave just two points from the field that weren't inside.
Berry led 23-15 after one quarter thanks to 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Ten of Berry's makes were on lay-ups. In the second quarter, Moore,
Kish Chandler, and
Sylvia Kahoro each scored four points as the Vikings grew their lead to 11 at the break, 39-28.
Kenadie Lee scored the only basket for Berry that was not inside the paint at the end of the quarter as her jumper beat the buzzer to give the Vikings a double-digit lead heading into the locker room.
Blankenship would go off for 10 points in the third quarter as the Vikings pushed their lead as high as 14 in the frame. BSC (9-6, 3-2 SAA) would get a pair of free-throws in the final seconds of the period to make it 59-47 after 30 minutes.
After a Moore lay-up gave Berry its largest lead of the night at 66-51 with just over five minutes remaining, the home squad would go on a run to make the final three minutes interesting. A 12-2 run by the Panthers made it 68-63 with 2:55 to go, but a Chandler jumper on the other end settled the Vikings.
Elizabeth Sierzant would make a lay-up one possession later for BC, and the Vikings would make the free-throws needed down the stretch to keep the Panthers at bay.
Chandler joined Blankenship and Moore in double-figures with 12 points and added a game-high six assists. Berry out-rebounded BSC, 43-39, and made seven more shots from the field (31-24) and five more shots from the free-throw line (17-12).
Four players scored in double-figures for BSC, led by McKenna Buckner's 15.
The Vikings will be back in action at Millsaps Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CST
