The Berry men's soccer team was handed its first loss of the young season Tuesday night when the homestanding Maryville Scots handed the Vikings a 2-1 setback in overtime.
The non-conference outcome evens the Vikes' record to 1-1 as Berry will now turn its attention to two more road games – the squad is opening the season with seven straight away games – this weekend when the team heads to Lexington, Ky., for two more tests when they face Alma College on Saturday and Bethany College on Sunday.
Against the Scots, Berry took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when a cross by Jensen Brown was miss-hit by Maryville's defender resulting in an own goal.
But in the opening minute of the second half, Maryville tied the game which remained knotted up at the end of regulation. The two remained deadlocked in the first overtime period but early in the second OT the Scots scored what proved to be the game winner off a corner kick.
Goalkeeper José Palacios recorded four saves for the Vikings.
