No. 14 Berry Dominates Millsaps in Four-Game Series

Rome, Ga. – The No. 14 Berry College softball team swept the Millsaps Majors over the weekend in a four-game series that consisted of two doubleheaders that began on Friday and wrapped up Saturday.

The Vikings' offense was explosive on Friday, as they put up 22 runs, 11 in each game, to defeat the Majors 11-3 in game one and 11-0 in game two.

Meredith Holland got the start in the circle in game one, improving to 7-1 on the season. Emily Schecter came in for relief and pitched the final inning. Madison Hollis got the start in game two and improved to 6-3 on the season with five strikeouts. Shirley Sharp came in for relief.

Bayleigh Masterson led the way in hits for the Vikings in game one with three. Shelby Daniel, Morgan Frye, Riley Jackson, Anna Jackson and Brooke Whittemore each recorded two. In game two, Masterson, Frye and Samantha Crabtree each connected with two hits.

On Saturday, the Majors came out with a different game plan and kept the Vikings on their toes for all of game three and most of game four.

Millsaps went up 2-1 in the sixth following a single from Brooklyn Wascom to score Mattie Taliaferro. However, a Majors error got things started for Berry as Crabtree reached first, eventually scoring Camryn Brown, who pinch ran for Crabtree, following a sac fly from A. Jackson to tie things up 2-2. Seven innings wouldn't suffice, so the game would go into extra innings.

Hollis, who came in for Holland in the sixth, would continue to pitch for the Vikings and would force the third out, but not before Millsaps threatened with a double. Tied up 2-2, Masterson reached on yet another error to start the bottom of the eighth and Sydney Moroney came in to pinch run. Crabtree then connected with a huge double to right center field to score Moroney and win the game, 3-2.

In game four, Millsaps took an early 1-0 lead and held that until the third when Aleeya Thornton tripled to score Daniel and tie the game 1-1. The Vikings would add two more runs in the third to go up 3-1. To wrap things up, Masterson sent one over the left field fence in the fifth to secure the 5-1 win.

Hollis would improve to 8-3 overall, while Schecter pitched four incredible innings, striking out two and giving up zero hits.
