Atlanta, Ga. – The No. 12 Berry baseball team traveled down the road to Atlanta to take on the Stormy Petrels in a four-game series beginning on Friday.
The Vikings would sweep the Petrels on Friday, winning game one, 7-6, and game two, 5-3.
Ben Coker got the start in game one, improving to 7-0 overall.
Will Macolino would pitch 1.2 innings and
Mason Carnes would pitch 1.1 innings to record his sixth save.
Oglethorpe went ahead 2-0 in the first, but a homer from
Weston Bray would tie things up 2-2 in the second. Bray wouldn't stop there, as he went 3-5, and connected with a double in the third to score
Evan Romeo and
Levi Cloud and go up 5-2. The Petrels threatened, adding two runs in the fourth to make it a 5-4 game, but the Vikings would add two runs in the seventh, followed by a single from
Dalton Smith and a double from
Zack Walch, to secure the 7-6 win.
Game two saw
Patrick O'Rourke get the start at the mound, improving to 5-1 overall and striking out four batters.
Berry jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third, but Oglethorpe closed the gap and made it 4-2 in the fourth. A single from
Jack Poist to score Walch in the fifth to make it 5-2 would be enough to close out the 5-3 win.
Oglethorpe had their way in games three and four, defeating Berry 9-4 and 12-9.
Charles Stephenson was dealt his second loss of the season in game three. Macolino and
Andrew Norred each saw time at the mound for relief.
In game four, several Vikings would get a shot at the mound, with
Tanner Still getting the start and his first loss.
Milan Sutaria,
Koby Dunn,
Will Marquart,
Brady Drummond and
Mark Swett would each come in to pitch throughout the game.
Both Berry and Ogelthorpe recorded six hits in game three, but the Petrels would add all nine runs in the fourth, followed by a three-run homer to get things started.
Tyler Calvert led with two hits.
Berry would connect with 12 hits in game four, but Oglethorpe's 16 would be enough to put them on top, 12-9. The Petrels scored in the first, but a home run from Calvert in the second would tie things up 1-1, however Oglethorpe responded with four runs in second and the Vikings were not able to regain the lead.
Calvert connected with three hits, while Walch and Smith each had two.
