Rome, Ga. – The Berry College baseball team kicked off the 2021 season on Monday night when they hosted Covenant College in doubleheader, sweeping the Scots 11-6 in game one and 14-0 in game two.
Ben Coker earned his first win of the season in the opening game, striking out four, while
Garrett West earned his first one in the second game, striking out five and only giving up one hit.
In game one,
Zack Walch got the runs going in the second with a double to left field, scoring
Dalton Smith and taking the 3-1 lead. From there, the bats stayed hot as
Wesley Wade,
Tyler Calvert and
Derrick Newman each homered for the Vikings. Though the Scots threatened with a couple of runs in the fourth and fifth inning, the long ball prevailed for the Vikings and
Weston Bray's single to right center in the bottom of the eighth secured the 11-6 victory.
In game two, Berry took advantage of an early fielding error and went up 5-0 in the first, following a single from
Zach Huie and a double from
Levi Cloud. From there, the Viking offense continued to find success as Calvert added another homer (his second of the night) in the third, Cloud added another double in the third and Wade and
John Poist also connected with doubles. The Vikings completed game two with 11 hits to Covenant's two and secured the 14-0 shutout.
Berry will host Maryville on Saturday, February 13 for a doubleheader beginning 2 p.m. EST. To keep up with the latest Berry College baseball news, follow the team on Twitter @BerryVikings or @BC_Baseball.
