For the second week in a row, the Berry football team rolled up the yards and the points, and came up the takeaways head coach
Tony Kunczewski was looking for from the defense as the Vikings rolled to a 59-0 Southern Athletic Association win over Sewanee on Saturday afternoon at Valhalla.
The victory improves Berry to 4-2 overall for the season and 2-1 in the SAA heading into a road game next Saturday when the Vikings visit Hendrix in Conway, Ark.
Against Sewanee, which has yet to taste a win in six outings this season, the Vikings ended the day rolling up 472 in offense, 284 of that on the ground, while holding the Tigers to just 214 total yards.
For the second straight week, freshman running back
Josh Rogers went over the century mark rushing for 102 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns, while backfield mate
Brandon Cade gained 82 yards on 15 rushes and scored a touchdown.
Junior quarterback
Gavin Gray once again was on target throwing the ball as he competed 18 of 26 passes for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with
Cameron Kawa leading the receiving corps with six catches for 44 yards and a TD, and
TJ Watkins giving the team its longest TD reception of the season that went for 70 yards.
Defensively, the Vikings came up with three turnovers, including an 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown by
Jordan Wilson and an interception each by
Elohim Hull and
Luke Filipkowski.
Connor Cheyunski led the Vikings with seven tackles and a sack,
Jake Weitkamp had five and
Destin Patrick recorded a sack.
Rogers provided Berry's first quarter points, scoring the game's first touchdown at the 6:13 mark when he broke loose for an 18-yard scoring run that capped a short three-play, 35-yard drive.
Matthew Syverson added the first of seven extra points.
Just over four minutes later, Rogers was back in the end zone, this time reach paydirt from 8 yards out to close out a 43-yard march.
The Vikings made it 17-0 with over six minutes to go in the first half when Syverson slip the uprights for a 39-yard field goal, then Berry widened the gap with 17 second left before intermission when Gray found receiver
TJ Watkins alone on the left sideline and Watkins went untouched for a 70-yard scoring pass to give the home team a comfortable 24-0 lead at the break.
Berry continued to find the groove on both sides of the ball in the final two quarters with the defense setting the tone just four minutes into the second half when Wilson scooped up a Sewanee fumble and took it 18 yards in for the touchdown.
Four minutes later, Gray found another target when he hit Kawa on a 2-yard scoring pass that gave the Vikings a 38-0 lead.
The Viking, however, weren't done as they scored three more times in the final stanza with Rogers tallying his third TD of the afternoon on a 24-yard jaunt, Cade put his name in the scoring column when he broke free for a 17-yard touchdown, and
Carter Morgan got into the offensive column when he rushed for a 43-yard tally, the longest run of the game for Berry.
