One came early, one came late.
Together the two goals capped off a Southern Athletic Association victory for the Berry women's soccer team when the Vikings fought off Birmingham Southern to claim a 2-0 win Friday night at Pearson Field.
The win improves Berry to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the SAA heading into the Vikings' final home game of the season Sunday when they host Millsaps for a Senior Day game starting at 2:30 p.m.
Against Southern's Panthers, Berry took the lead just under eight minutes into the game when
Karsen Brantley found the back of the net thanks to an assist from teammate
Lyndsey Francingues.
The 1-0 lead stood at halftime and, as was the case over the first 45 minutes of the game, Berry's defense controlled the ball, denying Southern any offensive opportunities as the Vikings gave up just two shots the entire game to the visitors.
Berry's offense, which finished the contest with 18 shots with 10 of those on goal, reassumed its assault in the second half and added a much-needed insurance goal with less than a minute to play when
Kendall Varitek took a crossing passing from
Sarah Satterfield and scored on a header.
Varitek led Berry's attack with three shots, all of them on goal, while Brantley,
Maeve McDougal,
Vanessa Belanger and
Haylee Stephens had two shots each.
