Football Wins Huge Road Contest Over Trinity 14-10

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO Devin Grier intercepted a pass from Trinity's Wyatt Messex with just over four minutes remaining to secure redemption for the No. 13 Berry College football team on Saturday, as the Vikings earned a huge 14-10 victory on the road.

The victory avenges the team's loss to the Tigers last season, which snapped Berry's winning streak of 24-straight regular-season wins. The Vikings improve to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Trinity drops to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Berry's defense forced a three-and-out on Trinity's first possession before marching 62-yards down field on the ensuing drive only to fumble the ball inside the Tiger's red zone.
  • Trinity went three-and-out again on their next possession, and got off just a seven-yard punt which gave the Vikings the ball on the Trinity 20-yard line. Heath Burchfield found Cade Kennemore in the back of the end zone to give Berry a 7-0 lead.
  • Trinity added a field goal in the second quarter then Messex connected with Tommy Lavine in the final seconds of the half on a 52-yard strike to put Trinity up 10-7 at halftime.
  • Neither team could score in the third quarter, but Burchfield found Michael Luckie early in the fourth to cap an 11-play, 95-yard drive and put the Vikings up 14-10.
  • Trinity was driving inside the Berry red zone on the next possession, but Alex Kirkendoll punched the ball loose from Messex and Mark Sommerville recovered from Berry. The turnover allowed the Vikings to run four minutes off the clock.
  • Trinity got the ball back inside their own 20-yard line before Devin Grier snatched his first interception of the year to secure the Vikings win.
