Box Score ROME, Ga. -- Angelica Miller's free position shot with time expiring was saved by Emily Erwin and Methodist University held on to defeat Berry College, 7-6, in the season opener for both teams.
Trailing 7-6, Berry called timeout with 13 seconds remaining. The Vikings advanced the ball from its goal area to Miller who was fouled with 1.5 seconds left within the 8-meter area. Miller got off a bounce shot which was saved by Erwin (six saves).
Madison Ronelli tallied the game-winner with 1:05 left for the Monarchs. She had a game-high four goals for MU (1-0).
Miller (one goal, one assist) gave Berry a 3-1 lead with 18:16 left in the first half. The two goal difference was the biggest of the game. The game was either tied or a one-goal game the rest of the way.
Kelsey McAnnally led the BC offense with three goals. Tori Alexander started for the Vikings in goal and made four saves. Ella Makin stopped two shots in the last 20:01 and took the defeat.
The Vikings (0-1) play at Southern Athletic Association rival Hendrix on Saturday, Feb. 20.
