Top ranked Trinity tops women's soccer

Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Top-ranked Trinity University handed the Berry College women's soccer team its first defeat of the year, 4-0, at Ford Field on Sunday.

The Tigers, ranked first in the current NSCAA national poll, improved to 2-0-2. The Vikings dropped to 2-1.

Trinity had the edge in shots (18-4) and corner kicks (3-1).  Berry's Jackie McGivney recorded seven saves and dropped to 2-1 for the year.

"We are a good team, but we got the opportunity to see the top level of Division III soccer today," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We gave up some cheap goals, but good teams apply pressure and capitalize. While I'm not happy with the result, we had a good effort today."

In the early minutes of the game, both teams shared possession evenly. TU, however, capitalized on two Berry defensive miscues to take an early 2-0 lead.

In the eighth minute, Berry turned the ball over in its defensive end and Trinity pounced on the chance when Emily Jorgens tallied from Kelsey Falcone.

Yasmeen Farra pushed the margin to 2-0 in the 27th minute. Kimberly Polasek earned assist on the scoring play, which occurred after a Trinity corner kick. The score remained 2-0 at halftime.

The Tigers got late goals from Hannah Hommel (77th minute) and Maggie Olvera (83rd minute) for the final score.

The Vikings' best chance to score occurred midway through the first half. Maggie Midkiff had Tiger goalkeeper Devan Osegeda off her line, but she stymied Midkiff's chance.

Berry plays at Covenant on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
