24th-ranked Rhodes too much for Vikings

ROME, Ga. – Rhodes College defeated Berry College, 58-46, on Friday night. Rhodes, ranked 24th in the D3Hoops.com national poll, improved to 17-3 and 9-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. Berry dropped to 11-11, 4-7.

Chanlir Segarra led Berry with 11 points. Mel McLean, Emma Cook and Maggie Trimble all had eight points for the Vikings. Lauren Avant scored 26 and teammate Symone Daniels added 18 for the Lynx.

Both teams shot 34-percent in the game. The visitors were 24-70 and BC was 17-50. Rhodes forced 11 turnovers and had just six miscues in the game. Both teams had 44 rebounds.

"It was the kind of game we wanted to play with them," Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn said. "We played the type of pace we wanted. But we they went on a big run early in the second half (17-5 over the first nine minutes) and then were trying to dig out of hole"

Rhodes held a 28-24 lead at halftime. The Lynx gained the edge in large part to Avant. She had 15 points at the break. The Vikings led for a good portion of the first half. Segarra had nine points in the first 20 minutes.

"We had a hard time boxing-out and they were getting too many too many put-backs," said  Dunn.

Cook gave Berry its biggest lead at 15-8 with 13:04 left in the opening half. Avant made a layup with 11:15 left to give her team the lead at 17-15. The Lynx never trailed again.

Rhodes led by 16 points twice in the second half. A Segarra's lone second half basket reduced the margin to 47-39 with 8:59 remaining, but The Vikings got no closer.

The Vikings host Hendrix on Sunday. Senior Day recognition will take place after the 1 p.m. game.
