SEWANEE, Tennessee -- The Berry College men's and women's swimming and diving teams ended competition at the 14th annual Sewanee Invite on Saturday. Out of a field of Division III and Division II teams, the men placed third out of nine. The BC women were fourth of 11.
"Strong competition brought out impressive performances from everyone," said Head Coach Paul Flinchbaugh. "We were pleased to see the team step up and compete head-to-head throughout the weekend."
The men started out the weekend setting a new meet relay record and continued to compile strong swims throughout the rest of the evening. The women began the meet with a third place finish in the opening relay and posted strong times during the rest of the first session.
"Friday was a fun line-up of events and it was great to see the team perform well with a set of non-traditional events," noted Assistant Coach Trevor Ehrenheim.
Saturday saw a strong start for the women. They posted a second place time on the first relay, followed by another first place finish from the men. Individually, both men's and women's teams continued to place competitively among the top finishers of each event.
Notable finishes included Haley Brown in the 50 Freestyle (2nd, 22.59) and 100 Freestyle (2nd55.91); teammates Johnathon Purdy and Cameron Grant in the 50 Freestyle (1st 21.83 and 2nd 22.32 respectively); Robbie Ellwanger in the 100 Breaststoke (2nd, 1:03.05); Adam Jarrell in the 200 Freestyle (2nd 1:52.93); Joey Ellwanger in the 200 Fly (2nd 2:02.83); Mac Stovall in the 500 Freestyle (1st 4:57.71); Purdy in the 100 Freestyle (2nd 48.58); and Monaghan in the 100 Fly (2nd53.64).
To close out the meet, the Viking men won the 200 Freestyle Relay. BC won by a substantial margin over Mars Hill and Sewanee, and set a meet record (1:27.29).
Vikings' swimming and diving is back in action in 2 weeks with a home meet against Sewanee on Saturday, November 15 at 3 p.m.
