Women's soccer beats BSC, 4-2, on senior day

Box Score

ROME, Ga. -- Freshman Maggie Midkiff scored three goals and dished one assist as Berry College defeated Birmingham-Southern, 4-2, on Sunday.

The Vikings improved to 13-3 and 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. BC's 13 wins are the most in a season since the 2004 club went 17-5-2.

B-SC fell to 6-9 and 3-3.

The home team, however, had to come from behind to earn the win on senior day. In the 21st minute, Sammy Manzon headed-in a goal for the Panthers.

Midkiff netted the equalizer in the 40th minute. The score remained 1-1 at the break.

In the 52nd minute, Caitlyn Crawford smashed a pass she received from Midkiff near the top of the box to put BC ahead 2-1.

The Vikes recorded their third straight goal in the 69th minute. Midkiff beat B-SC goalkeeper Richelled Byrd (four saves) to the left side for their seond tally.

The visitors, however, responded one minute later. Panther Catherine Sandon put a shot past Melissa Sanchez to cut the deficit to 3-2. Sanchez earned the win despite making no saves.

Midkiff got her hat trick in the 80th minute when she blasted a shot to the lower left for the match's final goal.

"I was in a bit of a slump, so it's nice to score a few goals," Midkiff said. "We wanted to represent well today for our seniors on Senior Day, so this was a great win."

Prior to the match, three seniors--Kim Fischer, Molly Johnson and Lindsey Williams--were recognized.

Berry led in shots (12-4) and corner kicks (4-3).

The Vikings close SAA regular season play at Oglethorpe next Saturday.
