Covenant Halts Women's Soccer Winning Streak

Box Score

ROME, Ga. –  Katelyn Newsome scored with 1:03 remaining to lift visiting Covenant to a 2-1 win over Berry at Ford Field on Tuesday. Newsome took advantage of a turnover and fired a shot from 15 yards past Viking goalkeeper Blair Shupenko.

Berry tied the match at 1-1 in the 76th minute. Cori Wagner scored on a nice pass from Molly Johnson.

The first half was mostly a defensive struggle, but Covenant tallied with 1:22 left on the clock. Kara Lee scored on a left-footed shot from 25 yards out. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Earlier in the first half, the Scots were awarded a penalty kick in the 17th minute. Shupenko, however, stopped Newsome's PK and the score remained 0-0.

The Vikings led in shots, 12-9. Covenant took the match's only two corner kicks. Shupenko had two saves for BC. Lucy Johnson, who played the last 14:05, earned the win for the Scots.

Covenant improved to 15-4-1. Berry dropped to 4-10-2.

"We made some mistakes in our defensive half and the last one cost us," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We did some good things today and hopefully we can build on those things this weekend."

The Vikings now face Rhodes on Friday in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. The quarterfinal match is at 8:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
