Box Score Berry Wins Home Opener Behind Pair of Goals from Leah Hatheway
ROME, Ga. - Leah Hatheway scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Berry to a 2-1 victory over Sewanee in the Vikings' home opener Thursday evening at Ford Field.
Berry improved to 1-1 this season, while Sewanee dropped to 0-3.
It didn't take long for Hatheway to find the net, scoring on an assist from Sheena MacGowan just over six minutes into the match.
But Sewanee would tie the score in the 15th minute on a goal from Lizzie Butler.
However, Hatheway would strike again in the 38th minute, when Kim Fischer played a long pass through the middle to the Berry forward, who streaked past her defender and beat Sewanee goalkeeper Virginia Zakas in a 1-on-1 situation.
The Vikings' defense would make the lead hold up over the final 52 minutes.
Hatheway took four of Berry's 13 total shots, while Kim Treese tried three shots. The Vikings outshot Sewanee 13-8 overall, including 6-2 in the final 45 minutes.
Brooke Clement played all 90 minutes in goal for Berry, recording six saves. Zakas finished with five saves for the Tigers.
The Vikings are scheduled to return to action Sept. 16 and 17 at the Methodist University Fall Invitational.
